vThis is a traditional Chinese ink wash hanging scroll painting from the 1900's,featuring bamboo. It is typically created using black ink on paper using varied brush strokes to create texture and depth. These scrolls often include calligraphic inscriptions (poems or titles) and red artist seals - a this one does. The painting is attached to a paper border with a wooden roller at the bottom for hanging and storage. This striking hanging scroll is known as 'Yisebiao' which means one colour mount.Hanging scrolls were originally intended to be displayed for short periods of time, after which they were rolled up and tied for storage. They are traditionally rotated according to season or occasion, rather than be on permanent display.
The craft of creating a hanging scroll is considered an art in itself. Originally introduced to Japan from China as a means of spreading Buddhism, hanging scrolls found a place in Japanese culture and art and plays an important role in interior decoration. This long Chinese scroll would certainly be a striking addition to any interior design. It is of a good used condition with a crease towards the top of the bamboo painting and foxing on the paper which happens when the paper naturally absorbs water over time. It is complete with original box.
