This is a lovely zebra wood cabinet designed by Neil Morris for Morris of Glasgow in the 1950s as part of the Cumbrae range. It is a compact cabinet and known as a lowboard as there is also a cabinet which is exactly the same style but on longer legs, known as the highboard. It would make a delightful drinks cabinet but also would easily accommodate other items for storage. The space above the shelf is 26cm and the space below the shelf is 28cm. It is in a good used condition with a slight lightening of colour at the top of the right hand door and also at the bottom right corner (please see photos 2 and 9).
This cabinet is made from a tropical zebrano wood with solid wood tapered legs. The sharp-edged appearance of the legs really adds to the style of the cabinet. It may not surprise you looking at the style of the legs that, during World War II, Morris & Co developed components culminating in the prototype of the helicopter blade made of laminated wood!
Post war Neil Morris concentrated on high quality furniture, becoming the favoured supplier of royalty and was commissioned to design and fit a bedroom suite for the Queen and Prince Philip as a royal wedding gift, which currently resides in Kensington Palace.
I also have a pair of matching side tables available for sale.
