PEL (Practical Equipment Ltd) were the leading manufacturers of modernist tubular steel furniture in Britain. This stack of 6 chairs are really well made and a stunning colour with a lovely sheen to them. They are very versatile and would look great in a kitchen, dining room, study, cafe or restaurant. Practically they will stack together if you need extra space or to store them away. These chairs still have the PEL trademark stickers on them. There are the expected marks and scratches on them but they don't detract from their stylish looks. I have taken a photograph of each chair for you to see.
Thanks to Modernisttourists and madeinoldbury websites I have found out that PEL were established in Birmingham and the parent company hoped to emulate the success of Thonet in producing steel furniture. PEL gradually shifted emphasis away from the ground-breaking modernist design of their early years to the functional practicality of their mass-produced stacking chairs. These stacking chairs, available with canvas, plywood or bakelite supports, were extremely popular and in recent years many have enjoyed a second life in Britain’s kitchens, dining rooms, cafés and restaurants. Happily, there is a still a plentiful supply of vintage PEL chairs available in Britain thanks to their use of high-quality materials and simple yet elegant construction.
